요리하고 먹고 또 요리하고 먹고 그리고 낚시하기

 

이번 달엔 내 추석 이야기를 소개하겠다. 내 아버지가 영국에서 비행기를 타고 제주에 왔다. 그래서 조금 더 특별한 추석이 됐다.

 

다른 한국 사람들처럼 우리도 9월18일부터 추석 연휴를 보냈다. 추석은 성산에 있는 처갓집에서 보냈다.

처갓집에서 차례 음식을 만들기 시작했다. 먼저 송편을 만들었다. 장모님이 송편 만드는 방법을 보여줬고, 나와 아버지는 장모님을 따라서 열심히 만들었다. 내 송편은 괜찮아 보였지만 장모님은 아버지가 나보다 더 잘 만든다고 했다. 사진을 보면 누구의 송편인지 맞출 수 있을까?

 

 

오랫동안 송편을 만들었다. 한 그릇이 끝난 후에 갑자기 다른 한 그릇이 나타났다. 나와 아버지는 같이 파업(?)을 했다. 장모님은 우리가 끝까지 해야 한다고 했지만 우리는 파업을 하고 커피를 마셨다.

 

시간이 조금 지나 우리는 다시 한 팀이 돼 ‘적 만들기’ 요리를 했다. 아버지는 꼬치에 소고기, 쪽파, 게맛살을 끼우고 장모님은 적에 계란물을 적셨다. 난 팬에서 적을 익혔다. 협업이 잘 돼 장모님의 잔소리는 사라졌다.

 

저녁이 되자 처남 가족이 부산에서 도착했다. 올해는 비행기대신 장흥에서 오는 배편을 이용했다. 배편을 이용하면 이점이 있다. 교통비를 크게 줄일 수 있다. 공항에서 성산포 집까지 이동거리도 1시간이 걸리는데 성산항에서는 5분으로 단축시킬 수 있고, 자기 차를 가져올 수 있어서 굳이 차량을 따로 렌트하지 않아도 된다. 이런 이점으로 처남가족은 앞으로 비행기보다 배편을 더 선호하게 될 것이다.

아버지는 영국에서 당신의 사돈댁 아이들을 위해 기념품 가지고 왔다. 유니언잭 학용품도 준비하셨다. 가지고 온 캐드베리 캐러멜 초콜릿과 요크셔 골드 홍차도 함께 마셨다.

 

아버지는 한국의 추석 음식을 먹으면서 영국의 크리스마스와 비슷하다고 말씀하셨다. 저녁에는 친척들이 집에 찾아와 대화를 나눴다.

 

 

 

다음날 오후에는 가족이 광치기 해안으로 갔다. 물이 빠져 난 낚시하고 처남은 바다 속에 들어가 수영하면서 작살로 물고기를 잡았다. 난 두 마리, 처남은 셀 수 없이 많이 잡았다.

 

부산에서는 이런 기회가 거의 없다. 처남은 예전에 작살로 물고기를 잡고 해변에서 요리해 먹었다고 한다. 어린 시절의 추억을 떠 올릴 수 있어서 매우 행복해 했다.

 

잡은 물고기는 회로 먹었다. 난 사시미를 좋아하지만 내 아버지는 먹어본 적이 없어서 먹을 수 없었다. 내 고향은 영국 중앙 지방에 있어서 소, 돼지, 양, 어린 양 등을 많이 먹는다. 바닷가 음식은 먹을 기회가 없다.

 

가족들과 함께한 내 추석을 잠깐 들여다봤다. 여러분들도 좋은 추석 보냈길 바란다.

 

*내 아버지는 10일 동안 제주도에 머물렀다. 제주에 있으면서 아부오름, 클린올레 행사, 도두봉, 조기축구, 협재해수욕장, 단산, 오설록 녹차밭, 올레 7코스, 한라산 정상(성판악, 관음사코스), 절물 휴양림, 비자림, 광치기 해안, 방선문 계곡, 안세미 오름, 이중섭 거리, 중문 해수욕장, 노꼬메 오름, 곽지 해수욕장, 유네스코 세계 자연 유산 센터, 4·3평화공원 등 제주의 여러 곳을 여행했다. 하지만 비용은 거의 들지 않았다.

 

 

A glimpse at my Jeju Chuseok

Cooking, eating, cooking, eating, and fishing

 

For this month's story I'm going to write about my Chuseok experience. It was a little more special this year because my father flew over from England and was able to join for the festivities.

 

Just like many other Korean families mine began on Sept. 18. We drove over to Seongsan to be with my wife's parents.

 

Upon arrival in the morning the frying pan came straight out. We would be making songpyeon. My mother-in-law showed us the method and we got straight to work. I think my songpyeon were just fine, but apparently my father did better. I included a photograph with this story so can you guess which ones are which?

 

We made songpyeon for quite a while. When we thought we had finished another big bowl of the mixture magically appeared in front of us. There was too much so we went on strike. My mother-in-law was not impressed and told us to continue. However, we still went on strike.

 

Later we were tempted back to work by the promise of cooking something different. This time we made jeok. My father put the meat and vegetables on the cocktail stick while my mother-in-law dipped them in beaten egg. Finally I had the responsibility of cooking this all in a pan. We worked together well and by the end we were like a well oiled team.

 

Later on in the evening my wife's brother and family arrived from Busan on the ferry. Instead of flying this year they decided to take a boat from Jangheung. If you factor in the price of airplane tickets for four people, a rental car, and a drive from Jeju City, they much favoured this option.

 

We don't get to see the Busan family often. My father brought gifts from England for them which included Union Jack branded stationary. We also ended up eating Cadbury Caramel chocolate with Yorkshire Gold tea on another night. A quite wonderful combination.

 

I think my father found the amount of food and the continuous eating similar to Christmas in some ways. Especially so at night when more family members came to visit. The house was full up at one point with everyone.

 

The next day brought more fun activities for all. As the tide went out in the afternoon we went to the Gwangchigi coast for fishing. I stayed on the rocks and managed to catch a couple of fish, while my wife's brother spent time spearfishing just off the coast.

 

He does not do it now he lives on the mainland and he was happy to relive the memories of his youth. Apparently he used to catch the fish and while they were still on a stick, cook them over a fire at the beach. Simpler times indeed.

 

Actually when we got back home my wife's brother chopped the fish up and we ate sashimi. My father isn't much of a fisherman, but was more than happy to come along. It is all sheep, cow, and pig, in our rural area of England so he didn't try the fish.

 

That is a little glimpse of Chuseok with my family. I hope you all had a good time as well.

 

*As a footnote to this story I wanted to share the itinerary we took in on Jeju Island. I also want to emphasise that the majority of these attractions were free or cost very little.
