(Last March I visited Chujado and this was one of my experiences.)

♣♣♣♣♣
As I walked through Chujado harbour the fishing boats next to me moved up and down on the current. Their flying flags fluttered strongly in the wind. All the remains of a storm not-yet-passed from the previous night. Now the sky was blue, but it was still cold. A storm warning was in place. “Today I can’t get to Jeju,” I thought.Tomorrow I had to work so this was a bit of a problem. However, I pushed this problem to the back of my mind and decided to try and enjoy my stranded-time on Chujado.I went to find a restaurant for breakfast and on the way saw the head of a sunken boat. A boat which had even passed under another moored nearby. I didn’t think much of it at first. Then, after eating well at the restaurant, I wanted to return to my motel.  Yet many people were gathering next to the sunken boat. They were going to try and raise it. As I didn’t have any other activity planned for the day I decided to hang around.I took a front row seat and settled down to watch.

Chujado is forty five kilometres north of Jeju Island, consisting of four inhabited and thirty eight un-inhabited islands. Almost all three thousand residents live on the two main islands, Sang-Chuja and Ha-Chuja. Chujado is known for its good fishing grounds and the gulbi fish. These days, because of the olle course, there are many more hikers visiting the islands. However, due to the weather sometimes the ferries don’t run. According to one police officer’s memory Chujado was cut-off for about twelve days and this was something I really didn’t want to happen to me. The unfolding sunken boat situation in front of me became more interesting. On the harbourside more people arrived and alongside the authorities, began to form a plan for raising the boat. It seemed one scuba diver and one crane would form the basis for the plan. The diver would secure ropes around the boat while the crane did the lifting. The scuba diver donned his wetsuit and air tank before taking a moment to make his final equipment checks. He then waited a little bit. The water was cold and dark. Sitting on the harbourside I was wrapped up in a winter jacket, hoodie, tee shirt, hat, and gloves. I guess the scuba diver resigned himself to the fact that he didn’t have much of a choice and jumped into the water. He said many things next, but the emphasis was on it being "very cold".

Now the real work started. The scuba diver used some ropes and disappeared under the boat for one or two minutes at a time. Was he trapped in the boat? During this time more people arrived. All with different opinions on how the raising should continue. The crane carefully prepared for the next task and moved its arm over the water. The diver placed a collection of ropes - now secured around the hull - onto the end of the crane arm. Raising time.“Hey, hey, hey!” the people shouted. The ropes rubbed on the boat’s hull and created a strange sound.“Hey, stop it!” the people shouted at the crane driver. So the crane went even slower.Still trucks passed by and the occupants strained forward for a glimpse. Children sat down on the harbourside and watched too.In a nice moment, at one point in the proceedings, the diver took a break and one police officer brought him a cup of instant coffee. It was a small gesture, but one I’m sure the diver appreciated. It was good to see.The boat eventually raised enough to remain in a half-floating and half-sunken condition. With this everyone seemed satisfied enough. More work would be done later. So I left the harbourside with it in mind to check back on the boat’s condition in the evening.

The evening came and I walked through Chujado harbour. Next to me fishing boats moved up and down on the current, their flying flags still fluttering strongly in the wind. Still a storm warning remained in place. Now the sunken boat was completely raised and the hull seemed intact. Some time would be needed to make repairs. The Chujado residents had really come together and were successful with their plan. However, I’m sure the residents face tougher situations than this, like one I read about earlier this year. A dawn evacuation of a pregnant women to Jeju City.I wanted to send my applause to the Chujado residents and I’m happy I managed to get a small peek at what life is really like on these small islands.
